The Iowa DHS offers two documents that attempt to state the number of psychiatric beds currently available in Iowa. Both documents fall short of providing a clear understanding of the number of beds, type of beds, and specific locations of these beds. The map pictured here is part of a document dated June 8, 2016. This indicates that there is a total of 731 staffed psychiatric beds in the state of Iowa (including the 96 MHI beds in Cherokee and Buchanan Counties, see previous section). These data are from 29 Hospitals (27 Private and 2 State MHIs). THE TOTAL OF NON-MHI PSYCHIATRIC BEDS IN IOWA IS 635.
Of the 731 Staffed Psychiatric Beds, they are subdivided as:
ADULT: 489
CHILDREN /ADOLESCENT: 142
GERIATRIC (OVER 55 YRS): 100
It's unclear how many psychiatric beds across Iowa are currently being used to treat Forensic Patients.
This is the second state map that the Iowa DHS offers to document the number of psychiatric beds in Iowa. The number of beds listed on this map differs from the map discussed in the previous section. The chronological age of these two DHS maps is unclear. Both are currently available on the Iowa DHS website. These data are from 27 Private Hospitals and do not include state-operated MHIs. It's difficult to reconcile these data.
27 PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALS (NOT INCLUDING 2 MHIs)
TOTAL BEDS: 727
OPERATIONAL BEDS: 615
It's unclear how many psychiatric beds across Iowa are currently being used to treat Forensic Patients.
